Thursday Thoughts – Happy Birthday!!!

So tomorrow is my birthday…. Not a big one, but close enough for me to start thinking about those big birthdays, the 18, 21, 30, 40, 50 and so on…

Why do those numbers necessitate a big celebration? A friend of mine once put forward the theory of why don’t we celebrate the square year birthdays? The 1, 4, 9, 16, 25, 36 etc. Kids would get more big birthdays early up when they are something to really get excited about and adults get them spaced out so they don’t get that “God I am old” feeling quite so often… It’s an interesting proposition.

In my house we don’t celebrate with big parties that often, my kids get big parties every third year as I simply don’t have the energy to put on a big party each year for each of my three kids…. This way they are spread out and each year one of the kids gets to feel special. And as for $1000 parties with jumping castles and petting zoos and the works.. I honestly cant see the point in them… But then $1000 is a lot of money to us, maybe if we had unlimited funds then it wouldn’t seem so absurd. As for the adults, I can’t remember the last birthday party I had… Maybe it was 26? And my partner is not a party person so it wold be more of a punishment than a present.  We just don’t seem to do them. Personally all that organisation just seems like so much work. So why am I willing to do it for my kids but not for myself?

When I was a kid birthdays were a huge event! I would count down the weeks, days, hours until it was my birthday, now I am lucky if I can remember how old I am turning… It seems that as we reach adulthood and start being responsible for adult things like bills, mortgages, kids etc, that we start to lose the magic feeling that comes with turning a year older. Is it because we have already celebrated so many that it seems a bit “been there, done that”? or is it because we are so bogged down in the day to day that we don’t have time or energy to devote to ourselves?

I guess I don’t really have much of a point to this post, but birthdays are a big subject in my house at the moment with my birthday tomorrow and my daughters fifth birthday in two weeks so they are kinda on my mind… What are your thoughts? Are birthdays a big deal in your house? Do you throw massive parties or prefer to ignore them and treat it as “just another day”? Let me know in the comments below…
